friends have told me how their kids used to be a good eater but then the kid later became a picky eater. i was always afraid that would come true because we’ve been lucky that k has been a really good eater. then last month, k started to say: “no peas” “no pepper” “no corn” consistently. every now and then she’ll say: “no tofu” “no blackberries” – which she normally loves. other times, she’ll be selective and say: “only bok choy”, “only fish” or “only pasta”. if we say “no”, she’d tantrum. what happened my happy eater?
at the beginning of the month, k was sick and had no appetite so m & i let k get away with being picky. but after she gained back her appetite she continued to say: “no peas, “no pepper”, “no corn.” i did a test and packed it for school. she ate them without argument (otherwise her teacher would have told us). so at home, i hoped i could nip it in the butt by not giving in.
- one way was “one spoon with peas”, “one spoon no peas”. that worked sometimes.
- another way is to give in to taking out one vegetable but sometimes k will surprise us by eating the vegetable after the meal is all done and that’s the only thing remaining.
- another time, i do the incognito method and hide the vegetable in the bottom of the spoonful.
- finally i tell k that all ingredients are mixed together and i can’t take it out. usually k will give in and eat it.
k is overall still a pretty good eater so i’ll keep counting my blessings.
