garlic free stovetop tomato sauce

cheesy mashed potato

potato is a staple for Thanksgiving and mashed potato is a family favorite. we haven’t introduced k to butter yet and k can’t have garlic so i had to alter the recipe. i remembered k’s daycare cooking class potato pancake day, i made cheesy potato pancake, so i made cheesy mashed potato! –> recipe on Palatable Palette i received the greatest compliment from the teacher at the end of the day: “what did you add to the mashed potatoes? the kids couldn’t get enough and were so upset when it was finished!“ Continue reading cheesy mashed potato

k’s daycare’s second cooking class / my cooking assignment was potato pancake. the teacher told me there would be eggs in the recipe and when i looked online for potato pancake recipes, i saw quite a variety of recipes, most included eggs, some uses grated potato while others used mashed potatoes, some is flavored with onions and garlic while others are flavored with cheese. pasta usually has gluten which means it’s not for k but luckily there are lots of different varieties of pasta! the first one i found was made of organic brown rice and they’re in fun kid-friendly shapes.

introducing new foods: lentil

a girlfriend and fellow mom of a toddler starting solids mentioned they introduced her to lentil so i was excited to have C try it too! i tried SHILOH brad lentil and picked brown lentils because it has the more iron than the other colors (red or green).

preparation is relatively easy – wash and boil for 30 minutes until soft. sometimes it took a little longer to cook because they weren’t soft enough but it required little attention. i always make an adult  serving and save the remainder a storage container.

i started k on lentil, sometimes with savory fruits and vegetables and other times with sweet. either way k took to it pretty well! i’m glad k has a healthy tastebud!

recipe: apple sauce

we often see parents feed babies apple sauce. it makes sense since the introduction to most foods, including apples, have to be cooked. apple saucei hadn’t made apple sauce before but on my first attempt at preparing apples, i boiled it for too long and voila, it became apple sauce!

whether you boil or steam, it’s so easy to prepare!

introducing new foods: apple

since i was planning to start k on fruits, it might as well be the healthiest of all fruits: the apple! there is such a variety of apples (macintosh, golden delicious, gala, fuji, pink lady, etc.) so which do you choose?

  1. i look for the choices of organic apples because unfortunately, apples have consistently been on the “dirty dozen” list *read note 1.
  2. i look for the type that is less sweet: i.e. Honey Crisp apples are very sweet where as Granny Smith apples have a nice tart flavor. so i started k on Granny Smith apples.

introducing new foods: potato (organic, please!)

the next vegetable we chose was the potato. potatoes are easy to find, have many ways to prepare and also pairs well with other fruits and vegetables. if anyone (including baby) is suffering from diarrhea *see note 1it can help so there were many reasons for our choice.
