daycare cooking assignment: sugar cookie

for the holidays k’s school is making sugar cookies. so i found this sugar cookie recipe and pared it down for k’s allergies – which made it just 2 main ingredients and a few flavoring ingredients (vanilla and salt). the only cookie cutters we owned were star wars cutters that m got as a gift. so for the trial run, i made  star wars apple “sugar” cookies.

milk sugar cookiem enjoyed the star wars cookies but i didn’t love the first recipe so i looked for another. this one had a few other ingredients, including egg, butter and milk. since k can’t eat eggs, i substituted it flax meal with water. i also used a vegan spread instead of butter. m liked the flavor of this milk “sugar” cookie better than the first.  Continue reading “daycare cooking assignment: sugar cookie”

apple banana pumpkin bread

since i enjoyed the filling in the apple banana pumpkin pie i made for k’s school, i searched for another recipe that had all three fruits and came across this bread recipe. i pared down a lot of the ingredients to simplify it and adjust it for k’s allergies / foods k hasn’t tried yet. –> recipe on Palatable Palette it came out great. no extra sugar added either – the fruits provided all of the natural sweetness. apple banana pumpkin pie

the first time i made pumpkin pie, i didn’t know if i could eat pumpkin pie again – knowing the ingredients and amount made me realize why pumpkin pie is so delicious. while i wanted k to experience a delicious dessert, i wasn’t ready for her to take in all the sugar and fat. so i searched online and found a recipe for the filling and a recipe for pie crust that sounded healthier and had very few ingredients given the limited foods that k has tried so far. –> recipe on Palatable Palette i was excited to try this recipe to see … Continue reading apple banana pumpkin pie

recipe: apple and avocado

in Wholesome Baby Food Guide there was a recipe for banana and avocado which sounded fun, like a pina colada. in the level of sweetness, apple sauce is as sweet as a banana and avocado has a more bland flavor but due to its fat content, creates a more creamy texture.apple and avocado

k enjoyed this combination a lot which lets me know that when i introduce her to banana, she’ll enjoy that as well!

recipe: apple sauce

we often see parents feed babies apple sauce. it makes sense since the introduction to most foods, including apples, have to be cooked. apple saucei hadn’t made apple sauce before but on my first attempt at preparing apples, i boiled it for too long and voila, it became apple sauce!

whether you boil or steam, it’s so easy to prepare!

introducing new foods: apple

since i was planning to start k on fruits, it might as well be the healthiest of all fruits: the apple! there is such a variety of apples (macintosh, golden delicious, gala, fuji, pink lady, etc.) so which do you choose?

  1. i look for the choices of organic apples because unfortunately, apples have consistently been on the “dirty dozen” list *read note 1.
  2. i look for the type that is less sweet: i.e. Honey Crisp apples are very sweet where as Granny Smith apples have a nice tart flavor. so i started k on Granny Smith apples.
